I have spent a lot of time in Australia over the past 11 years since my first visit as an American tourist with the new white shoes. Soon after that I moved to New Zealand and lived there for six years, during which I made regular visits to "Oz". There were a few short holidays and business trips, but when I started travelling full-time in 1998/99 it was the first country I chose to experience in-depth. So I joined two friends in a 1974 VW Kombi and headed up the coast for many adventures.
Eventually I bought my own travel van, which I kept in storage here and there between trips for many years, and used it to do several long journeys throughout the country. The longest was from October 2001 to May 2002, when I did a giant figure-8 of the whole country, as shown in the map. I was back again for three months again in 2005 too! |
