A young boy prepares to enter the temple as a novice for the traditional 3-month period.  This festival happens every year, this one in the lovely town of Pai, a couple hours from Chiang Mai

A Hmong hilltribe village on the other side of Doi Pui.  Quite a few tourists come here, but it's still an interesting place to visit just outside the city, where you can look at opium poppies and other beautiful gardens, try on a traditional costume, and maybe buy some whiskey or a "tiger penis" (I think it's actually from a pig)
Pictures from the "Miss Flower Blossem" contest during the annual Flower Festival in February.
And the winner is...
the contestant with the wet nose in the pink flower dress!
Royal Pagoda (one of two) near the summit of Doi Inthanon, the highest point in Thailand (2565M)
Baby elephant with mother at the Elephant Conservation Centre near Lamphang.  He fell in a hole and broke his back so now has a baby bouncer to support his useless back legs.  The conservation centre is really worth visiting!
Sawadee Krab Khun Ronald!
Below a series of pictures from a Monk's funeral and cremation, near Chiang Dao about an hour north of Chiang Mai.
After a couple hours of public speaches, blessings, and other rituals, the casket and entire shrine construction are vigourously consumed by flames.
Here is another funeral taking place, this one much smaller for a village girl who died of AIDS.
Khao Soy is one of the classic northern Thai foods (actually it was brought in by Burmese caravan traders) and Pai has one of the best Khao Soy restaurants.  Aroy mak!
Last year was one of the driest in over a decade, so the fields around Pai in late March were essentially "dead" - come on rainy season!!!
Just one of many trekking pictures in the far north.  See more by clicking the link or go to the "Other Northern Thailand" page first.

I've been living here since early 2004.  It's a great place to explore!
