The Khao San Road in Banglampoo district, as it was in 2001.  Now there are four 7-11's, McDonalds, Burger King, and many more up-market guesthouses. 
The Chao Praya River Express boats wiz up and down the river.  It stopps frequently and cost next to nothing so it is a prefered way to get around.
